Excerpt from opening speech to exhibition in 1997 by George Alexander
Artists like John, … by looking below the surface to the inner form of things achieve some kind of special airspace between the viewer and the artwork. It may not seem like much but we need these islands of contemplation to cope with the rest of the time. Quietly, John shows how art can be an instrument of connection and healing, rather than merely echoing the alienation and sickness. John's work carries a charge, half forgotten in the art world, and society at large - sincerity - by which I mean a purity of intention that others recognise. You know that means this stuff by the intensity of his fealty to the tradition of painting.
